Frequently Asked Questions
-
Organize Utah is a network of labor organizers fighting to win back control of our workplaces and our lives. We are united in our belief that well-organized unions, built upon rank-and-file power, are necessary to overthrow the tyrannical system of wage slavery. To this end, we share knowledge and pool resources to help each other in unionization campaigns at our workplaces.
-
The acceptance that the owner class will never willingly compromise with workers, and that no contract or agreement that is enforced by the owner class will ever provide meaningful security to workers. We in Organize Utah believe the only way to change the state of labor is to dismantle the class system and end wage slavery.
-
The acknowledgement that all value in the world is produced by human labor, whether that labor be in fields, mines, or urban centers. Us workers already have all the power we need to win the class struggle, we just need to become better organized in our workplaces, and connected to other unionized workplaces through community networks.
-
First, join your union! Start by attending one of our organizing events: we offer Organizer Trainings to help you start building structure in your workplace; we host socials to bring labor together and celebrate our victories; we hold meetings to vote on new priorities and bring items to the attention of all members; and occasional mobilization events (like supporting a picket line!) If you find you like organizing beyond just your workplace, keep coming to our events and eventually become a full member.
-
We're just a network of organizers all trying to manifest change in our workplaces and society. All the work of Organize Utah is just the work of its members, just as all the work of a union is the sum of the work of its members. Remember: your union doesn't work for you, you work for your union!
-
After a tough unionization campaign at a local business, a group of experienced organizers identified the gaps in their knowledge and resources and vowed to create a network to provide that experience and resources to workers like them, workers who are creating a union from nothing in their workplace. Over time, the mission of Organize Utah has extended into reforming existing unions into more democratic, rank-and-file led organizations.
-
No! You are welcome to donate to the Utah Workers Center, which graciously allows Organize Utah to utilize its resources and office space. We advise paying dues to your own union so that it has more teeth when it comes to fighting with the owner class.
-
Attend our events! Ideally attend one of our Organizer Crash Courses, where you will receive a new set of skills to bring back to your workplace and share with your coworkers.
